Bio:
Steve North is a sculptor who works directly with raw granite, transforming dense stone into quietly dynamic, abstract forms. His practice is rooted in the physically intensive process of direct carving—drilling, shaping, and refining surfaces until weight, balance, and line begin to suggest unexpected movement and fluidity.
Drawn to granite for its strength and permanence, North allows each block to gradually reveal its final form through repeated interactions with hand tools. Influenced by natural erosion, stone architecture, and the movement of bodies through both built and natural landscapes, his sculptures explore how solid structures can evoke motion, flow, and transition.
Process is central to North’s work. Each sculpture develops through a dialogue between the artist and the material, guided by touch, sound, and accumulated decisions over time. The resulting works become records of growth, force, and human effort.
Designed for both indoor and outdoor environments, North’s granite sculptures invite viewers to slow down and experience the changing relationships between mass, light, shadow, and perspective.
