Bio:
Jose Trejo Maya is a multidisciplinary artist and writer whose work is rooted in the Nahuatlacah oral tradition and influenced by ancestral memory, cultural identity, and storytelling. Born in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, and raised in the rural pueblo of Tarimoró, Trejo Maya immigrated to the United States in 1988. His creative practice draws inspiration from writers and thinkers, including Netzahualcoyotl, Humberto Ak’abal, Ray A. Young Bear, James Welch, and Juan Rulfo.
His work spans poetry, visual art, and public sculpture, with exhibitions and publications internationally across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and Canada. He has created outdoor public sculptures in Washington, Oregon, and Massachusetts and has received recognition, including a Pushcart Prize nomination, the Jack Straw Writers Fellowship, and the Mozaik: Ecosystems X Future Art Awards Group Exhibition Special Mention. His work continues to explore connections between history, land, memory, and cultural continuity.
