Bio:
J.G. Rives is a carpenter, woodworker, and artist based in Hudson, New York. After two decades living and working in New York City, Rives transitioned to a new life centered around craftsmanship, building, and working with natural materials.
His sculptural practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for the character, history, and transformation of wood. Three Graces began with the discovery of a 16-foot log found along the Hudson River beneath the George Washington Bridge. Covered with woodpecker holes and shaped by time and nature, the log was reclaimed, divided into three sections, and transformed into a sculptural grouping that celebrates the beauty of natural form.
Through his work, Rives explores the relationship between found materials, storytelling, and the landscapes in which they exist. His sculptures invite viewers to consider the history held within natural objects and the possibilities of giving them new life.
