Bio:
John Umphlett was born in southern New Jersey in 1974. He earned his BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and later received his MFA from Bennington College in 1999. His multidisciplinary practice spans installation, video, performance, drawing, and sculpture, with exhibitions at institutions including the Emory Community Art Center / University of Maine Farmington, Southern Vermont Art Center, Collar Works in Troy, NY, Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota, Bennington Museum, and EMPAC at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
An innovative and inquisitive artist, Umphlett continually explores experimental processes by investigating the physical properties and limitations of materials. His work examines the relationship between the material world and the ephemeral human experience, exploring ideas of vulnerability, perception, illusion, and connection. Through sculpture and other media, he seeks to reveal intangible forces that exist between the external and internal worlds.
