Hugh MacDonald
Artist Full Name:
Hugh MacDonald
Based Out Of:
Old Lyme, Connecticut
Bio:
Hugh Thomas MacDonald began his artistic career after earning a degree in Advertising Art and Design from SUNY Farmingdale. Initially working as a commercial artist, he later discovered a passion for creating his own sculptural work, inspired in the 1970s by the wire sculptures of Alexander Calder.
Working primarily with metal, MacDonald transforms rigid industrial materials into expressive, organic forms often infused with humor and playfulness. For 40 years, he owned and operated a sheet metal shop, providing both the skills and materials that shaped his sculptural practice. He also holds a patent for the Water Wheel Boat Cart, a kayak carrier he designed and manufactured.
MacDonald’s sculptures and drawings have been featured in hundreds of exhibitions throughout New England. His large-scale outdoor sculptures can be found in shoreline communities including Groton’s Avery Point, Stonington, Madison, Clinton, and Old Lyme. Through his work, he invites viewers to experience the unexpected possibilities of metal through balance, form, and imagination.
