Bio:
Gregory Smith is a North Pownal, Vermont native who began his sculpture studies with Isaac Witkin and Brower Hatcher at Bennington College before continuing his education with Paul Aschenbach at the University of Vermont. Although he has worked in wood, clay, and bronze, his primary media are welded steel and, more recently, copper.
For nearly a decade, Smith shared a New York City welding studio with sculptors Willard Boepple and James Wolfe. Since returning to Vermont in 1988, he has continued exhibiting throughout New York and across the United States. His work has been featured at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York and nine times in the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition at Chesterwood in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Smith has received numerous honors, including the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award for Outdoor Sculpture from the Silvermine Guild and three awards from the Mohawk-Hudson Regional Exhibition. In 2005, the Bennington Museum presented the retrospective Gregory Smith – Wall Sculpture: The First Twenty-Five Years. He received the Best in Show award at the 14th Annual National Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2019. His large stainless steel sculpture The Wealth of Fools has also been exhibited at the Vermont Arts Council headquarters in Montpelier.
