Cecilia André
Artist Full Name: Cecilia André
Based Out Of: New York City
Bio: Cecilia Andre is a Brazilian painter of Lebanese descent who earned her BFA and BAE from the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation in Brazil before relocating to New York in 1991. There, she furthered her training at the New York Studio School, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts.
Her artistic practice centers on immersive explorations of light and color. A turning point came with her 2019 solo exhibition at Plaxall Gallery, where she introduced fabric and vinyl transparencies to create enveloping visual experiences. This work deepened during her 2020–2021 AnkhLave Arts Alliance Fellowship at the Queens Botanical Garden, supported by a Queens Council on the Arts grant for outdoor installations.
Andre has exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout Brazil, as well as at venues in New York, Massachusetts, Missouri, and New Jersey, including a notable solo exhibition at Gallery OneTwentyEight curated by A.I.R. founder Kazuko Miyamoto.
Since 2021, she has taken on a significant curatorial role, receiving the NY Artists Equity Curatorial Residency and returning to AnkhLave as Curator-in-Residence through 2024.
Her recent work has been showcased through prestigious residencies, including ChaNorth and Material for the Arts, where she presented To Shed New Light, and ChaShaMa Space, where she mounted Dancing With Colors. Most recently, she was the invited artist for FIT’s Picturing Light, creating a site-specific installation for the Art and Design Gallery. Her latest project brought these immersive sensibilities to a grand scale—a centerpiece canopy created for the exhibition Breathe at Westbeth Gallery in New York.
