John Umphlett is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans installation, performance, drawing, and sculpture. Born in 1974 in southern New Jersey, Umphlett earned his BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his MFA at Bennington College in 1999. His work often explores the interface between materiality and the human condition, probing physical and emotional vulnerabilities through experimental processes.
Umphlett has exhibited at venues including the Bennington Museum, Franconia Sculpture Park (MN), EMPAC (Rensselaer, NY), Collar Works (Troy, NY), and Southern Vermont Art Center. His work reflects a persistent inquiry into material behavior, emotional resonance, and metaphysical questions, often invoking control, constraint, and transformation.
